What an Experience!

Tickets to the Scavi di San Pietro are the most coveted tickets in Rome so when 2 LMU students were unable to attend the summer program in Rome, Fr.Marc knew just who to gift the tickets to. To be fortunate enough to tour two levels under St Peter’s is a gift I will never forget.

To tour St. Peter’s Basilica is awesome enough but to walk through the passageways of the burial tombs 2 levels below only discovered during excavations in the 1940’s is absolutely amazing.

When you see the main altar of St. Peter’s you intellectually understand that St Peter’s tomb is beneath it, but the Scavi tour takes you to his authenticated bones, the actual site where he was crucified upside down and buried, well, I was overwhelmed!  Jesus chose Peter as His successor!  You cannot come any closer to St Peter and, by association, Jesus!

If you know me, well, you know how I reacted 😢.

Now if I can ever make it to the Holy Land!

Just an aside…no photos allowed down in the Scavi but you might find a couple of YouTube videos…

Prior to the Scavi tour, Dom and I spent 2 hours once again touring the main Basilica, again marveling at Michelangelo’s Pieta and the other spectacular sculptures and altars.  There is always something new to discover at the Basilica.

We made our way back to our hotel, about 4pm, not having had any lunch.  Dom brought in pizza from a local place and I did something I didn’t know I was able to do….I took a nap!

Aperitivo is such a genteel custom that I think I might bring it back home.  How convenient to have a rooftop bar at our hotel!

And after the Aperitovo, why not add a glass of wine and a charcuterie board.

What a perfect ending to a perfect day!
